A Rocky Mount man charged with possessing child pornography was released from the hospital Tuesday evening and is now in Roanoke City Jail.
Michael Carey Miles, 60, had spent nearly two weeks in an area hospital for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, according to Investigator Jay Mason with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
On May 6, Miles was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on 50 counts of knowingly possessing sexually explicit visual material, having as a subject a person less than 18 years old.
Deputies traveled to Miles' residence on Six Mile Post Road just after 7 p.m. on May 9 to arrest him on the charges, Mason said.
While a deputy knocked on the door, Miles exited the residence through a side basement door, Mason said. A second deputy encountered Miles, who was carrying a rifle. Miles did not point the weapon at the deputy.
While the deputy was commanding Miles to drop the weapon, the gun discharged and Miles dropped to the ground, Mason said, with a gunshot wound to his face.
Miles was transported to a local hospital then airlifted to another medical center, where he spent more than a week in intensive care.
The charges against Miles stem from a tip from detectives with the Roanoke City Police Department.
Investigators with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office searched Miles' residence on Aug. 6, 2012, according to Investigator J.P. Nolen.
At Miles' house, investigators seized several computers, CDs and flash drives, Nolen said.
The computers were sent to the state police forensic lab in Richmond for evaluation, then sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Nolen said.
Over 2,000 images of preteen children, mostly female, were discovered on the computers, Nolen said.
All the images were downloaded from the internet.
Miles has also been charged with 16 counts of possessing child pornography in Roanoke City.
Possession of child pornography is a Class 5 felony, punishable by one to 10 years in prison for each count.
Miles is being held in the Roanoke City Jail without bond on the charges in Franklin County, Mason said. He still requires some medical treatment for his injuries.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt. It is a determination by jurors that enough evidence exists to warrant a trial on the charges.
