The Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival is set for this weekend, starting today, at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds on Coopers Mountain Road in Franklin County.
It's a charity fundraiser that takes place every Memorial Day weekend and is operated by Rooster Walk Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to music, arts and education in the area.
Last spring, Rooster Walk 4 drew roughly 3,500 people to see 32 bands over the course of four days.
The festival, which features on-site camping, as well as arts, crafts, food and children's activities, donates its proceeds to the Penn-Shank Memorial Scholarship at Martinsville High School. In the past four years, Rooster Walk has raised $20,000 for the scholarship fund for seniors at MHS.
Rooster Walk was created in memory of two Martinsville natives who passed away while still in their 20s -- Edwin "the Rooster" Penn and Walker Shank.
Rooster Walk has been named one of the top 100 events in the Southeast by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine and highlighted in Southern Living magazine, among other honors and accolades.
Rooster Walk 5 will take place May 24-26.
