Ferrum College will continue the tradition of providing family entertainment to the region with the new Blue Ridge Performing Arts Series.

The 2013 series begins this summer in partnership with the Virginia Commission for the Arts. A variety of talented, professional performers are booked throughout the next year.

The first event, a performance by Larnell Starkey and the Spiritual Seven, is slated for June 15.

In the tradition of the Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre (BRDT), food, fellowship and education will be featured in the college's new performing arts venture. The BRDT, which made its home at the college for more than 30 years, closed its doors at the end of the 2012 season when its founders, Rex Stephenson and Jody Brown, retired.

"We look forward to greeting our loyal Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre audience members this summer and to welcoming newcomers to the inaugural season of the Blue Ridge Performing Arts Series at Ferrum College," said Ferrum College President Jennifer Braaten.

Former BRDT volunteers are also invited to return this year.

As a non-profit community outreach program, Blue Ridge Performing Arts Series will welcome community volunteers to help implement the performances.

"Volunteers were part of the heartbeat of the BRDT and we invite them to return to support the new series," said Coordinator Brooke Gill.

Following Larnell Starkey and the Spiritual Seven on June 15, scheduled performances this year include "Hello Stranger," featuring Dale Jett, on July 20; Barter Theatre's production of "The Ghost in the Meadow" on Sept. 27; Rex Stephenson's special one-man show celebrating the college's centennial on Oct. 6; and BRASS 5's holiday show on Dec. 7.

Events already planned in 2014 include music and dance with the Celtibillies on Feb. 14, 2014; Barter Theatre's production of "Don't Cry for Me, Margaret Mitchell" on May 3, 2014; and a to-be-scheduled Roanoke Symphony Orchestra fundraiser, featuring Bob Ravenscroft and David Wiley, in the spring of 2014.

Additional events, including performances by the college's Theatre Arts department, will be added to the schedule as well.

For all events except Stephenson's show on Oct. 6, Blue Ridge Performing Arts Series patrons will have the option of enjoying a meal prior to each performance for an additional charge. Show-only tickets are also available.

For a detailed performance schedule, reservations and additional information, visit or call (540) 230-6600.
