Poker Run set this weekend

The 16th annual Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run, presented by the Smith Mountain Lake Boating Association, will take place May 17-18.

Registration and a social event will take place Friday at Mango's at Bridgewater Plaza, and the event itself will be Saturday, May 18. The awards banquet will follow at Mariner's Landing.

A new "Fun Run" has been added to this year's event for those participants who arrive early for the festivities that actually start Friday.

Friday morning, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a SMLBA sanctioned Fun Run that will give one lucky winner a guaranteed $500 prize.

The way the run is designed will also add a little more money for the SMLBA to donate, along with poker run proceeds, to lake area charities.

The Fun Run will begin at 11 a.m. at Mariner's Landing, where most participants will be housed. Before departure, each "runner" donates $10 to draw a card, or as many cards as they like at $10 each. Funds from this will go to the SMLBA. After a casual cruise of the lake, the "runners" will end up at Mexico Viejo for lunch, where drink and food specials will be offered. At lunch, the holder of the highest card will be awarded the $500 by Dabareiner. To prevent a tie, card suits will be the determining factor.

All "runners" will then return to Mariner's Landing in time to catch the shuttle bus to take them to Bridgewater Plaza for the evening festivities, kicking off the 16th annual Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run.

To register for this event, visit www.smlba.com and click on poker run, and then click on "register now."
