A Bassett man faces up to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty last week in Franklin County Circuit Court to distribution of heroin.
George Clinton Haislip III, 21, pleaded guilty to distributing 2.58 grams of heroin on Sept. 19, 2012, through a controlled buy arranged by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Tim Allen said the controlled buy occurred at a retail store in Rocky Mount. The exchange of the heroin for $400 was made when Haislip placed the heroin in a Newport cigarette carton and placed the carton next to a drink machine, Allen said. The buyer, who had paid Haislip at another location, then picked up the heroin.
After Haislip entered a guilty plea, Judge W.N. Alexander II revoked Haislip's bond and sent him to jail until his sentencing hearing, set for July 15 at 3:30 p.m. in circuit court.
While the maximum sentence for distributing heroin is 40 years, a total of five years must be imposed.
Haislip was on probation for possession of heroin with the intent to distribute in Roanoke in 2011, Allen said.
Haislip has three pending charges of distribution of cocaine in Henry County, according to court records.
