Ferrum College celebrates 97th commencement

Monday, May 6, 2013

Twenty-one Franklin County residents are among the 221 graduates who received their degrees as Ferrum College celebrated its 97th annual commencement Saturday.

The ceremony included the presentation of student, faculty and alumni awards, as well as an address by Columbus State University President, Dr. Timothy S. Mescon. A picnic lunch on the lawn for graduates and their guests followed the ceremony.

"I can think of no better way to mark our Centennial year than by celebrating the accomplishments of these wonderful young men and women," said Ferrum College President Jennifer Braaten, speaking about the class of 2013, one of Ferrum's largest graduating classes in recent years. "They worked so hard to reach this momentous day in their lives and that of their families and friends."

"I am not only proud of them, but also of our faculty and staff who taught, nurtured, mentored and supported them in myriad ways through their undergraduate years," she added.

Among the top majors of this year's graduates were business administration (22), criminal justice (20), health sciences (20) and liberal arts (19).

Among the award recipients was Allen DeHart '54, who received the Ferrum College Beckham Medallion.

Named after the college's first president, Dr. Benjamin M. Beckham, the Beckham Medallion is the highest honor bestowed upon an alumnus.

DeHart gifted the 172-acre DeHart Botanical Gardens in Patrick County to the college and was honored for his loyalty to the school.

Graduates also participated in a traditional Baccalaureate service Friday evening in Vaughn Chapel. The service concluded with a candlelight ceremony at Hart International Plaza to symbolize the light of knowledge that the new graduates will carry forth into the world.

The following are this year's local graduates: Steven Dwayne Abner of Ferrum, Kaye Lynn Adams of Ferrum, Abbey Ellen Anderson of Moneta, Miranda Clare Banks of Rocky Mount, Chelsie Shae Brown of Ferrum, Tyler Hampton Brubaker of Rocky Mount, Marcus Ronald Eug Burwell of Hardy, Amanda Michelle Conner of Rocky Mount, Holly Virginia Gerlach of Rocky Mount, Leah Marie Gunter of Henry, Terry Michael Hall of Rocky Mount, Tanisha Yavonna Harris of Rocky Mount, Kayla Nicole Hartman of Floyd, Christopher Wayne-Alla Higginbotham of Ferrum, Cannon Michelle Morris of Rocky Mount, Amelia Blake Pagans of Rocky Mount, Patrick Wayne Scott of Ferrum, Darren Lamar Smith of Rocky Mount, Erika Leigh Thompson of Henry, Samantha Jean Underwood of Ferrum, and Kyle Robert Zeller of Rocky Mount.
