A book signing has been scheduled for local author Lisa Pickeral Chitwood, whose first children's book is scheduled for release in late May.

"Hunt With Your Heart" is the story of a young boy, Will, who is making plans for his first hunting trip. Will's Papa has taught him everything he needs to know about hunting and has given him a lifelong piece of advice -- to hunt with his heart.

Will goes on his first hunting trip, but is faced with a decision that helps him understand the real meaning of hunting with your heart.

"This is a story about caring and random acts of kindness," said Chitwood. "It is a message for all ages, really. We all need to start caring more for others."

Chitwood resides on the Blackwater River, where her father actually took her son, Will, hunting for the first time.

The book, which is full of brightly colored illustrations, is based on a true story, Chitwood said.

"I've always loved to write and I've always loved creative writing. I was raised with a strong faith in God, and the main character in my book also has a strong faith in God."

Chitwood holds a bachelor's degree in education and has been a teacher for 13 years. She is currently a sixth-grade teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

Born and raised in Franklin County, Chitwood is the daughter of Bill and Zem Pickeral. Chitwood said her father, who is also the former Police Chief of Rocky Mount, is the inspiration behind writing "Hunt With Your Heart."

She has two children, twins, Alexandra and Will, who are 21.

The book signing for "Hunt With Your Heart" will take place Saturday, May 4 from noon until 4 p.m. at Carter's Fine Jewelers.

Copies of the book will also be available at that time for purchase.

Chitwood said she has a second book in progress which will feature her daughter Alex and Alex's dog, Lily.

That book, and future books, will also focus on teaching different life lessons.

"Hunt With Your Heart" is published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, LLC.

Soft copies are $8.99 each and hardback copies are $16.00 each (the cost of the hard copies includes tax).
