Faith Christian School of Roanoke netted two goals in the opening half en route to a 3-2 Virginia Association of Christian Athletics (VACA) Southwest District girls' varsity soccer victory over Christian Heritage Academy Tuesday.
CHA (0-1 in the VACA Southwest, 0-1 overall) was playing its 2013 season opener.
"It was our first match of the season and we were very timid in the first half -- we have a very young team this year,' Knights head coach Pete Trout said.
"But we played much better in the second half and dominated possession, but we just could not connect on our second and third passes consistently,' Trout said.
Hannah Martin scored two goals, one in each half for Faith Christian (1-1-0 in the VACA Southwest, 1-1-0 overall), which squared its league and overall records with its first triumph of the season.
Morgan Broom also scored for Faith Christian.
Faith Christian scored its goals at 8:35, 26:45 and 64:10.
All three of Faith Christian's goals were unassisted.
Chelest Shelton netted the Knights' first goal at 53:15, courtesy of an assist from Belle Woolson, and Brittany Shelton also tallied a goal for CHA at 74:10 off an assist from Melissa Andersen.
Faith Christian outshot CHA, 12-8, and each team took three corner kicks.
CHA goalkeeper Gloria Wood registered eight saves. Faith Christian netminder Haley Branin recorded two saves.
"Both (Wood and Branin) are first-year goalies and both played well,' Trout said. "Faith Christian showed good hustle.'
