Chug for the Jug returns April 27

SONTAG -- The annual Franklin County Community Bank Chug for the Jug 5K race will be held Saturday, April 27.

The 3.1-mile race, which takes runners through Rocky Mount, takes the starter's gun at 9 a.m. at the Rocky Mount Farmer's Market.

This year's race will be run in memory of local businessman and distance runner Larry Heaton, who died in a car accident in Patrick County in December.

Andrew Parkins of Salem, who has won the men's 5K title three of the last four years, and Melissa Teeple, who has captured the last two women's 5K crowns, are the reigning race champions.

Teeple is a long distance prep standout at Franklin County.

Entry fee is $10 for runners ages 17 and younger and $20 for runners ages 18 and older.

The Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital Health Walk Challenge and the Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation Kids' Fun Run will be held in conjunction with the Chug for the Jug 5K.

The fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. and the health walk starts at 9 a.m.

Entry fee for the health walk is $10 per walker or $30 for a team of four.

There is no entry fee for the fun run which is for youth ages 12 and younger.

Online registration is available for these events at www.franklincountyva.gov/parks.

On-site registration for these events begins at 7:30 a.m. on race day.

After Thursday, April 25 and additional $5 fee will be added to all registrations for the Chug for the Jug and the health walk.

Race packets can be picked up at the recreation department office Friday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
