JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- Ferrum College's golf team opened the spring portion of its 2012-13 season with a 27th place finish in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational hosted by Oglethorpe (Ga.) University.
Thirty teams compete in the three-day, 54-hole, stroke-play event.
The Panthers finished with a 975 total (331, 321, 323).
Illinois Wesleyan College won the tournament with a 882 (295, 292, 295).
From the USA South Athletic Conference, multi-time league champion Methodist (N.C.) University (890) placed second, Christopher Newport University (913) was ninth, Greensboro (N.C.) College (923) and LaGrange (Ga.) College (923) tied for 12th, Maryville (Tenn.) College (954) was 26th and Piedmont (Ga.) College (980) was 28th.
Illinois Wesleyan's Stefan Johnson and Brad Shigezawa of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tied for medalist honors, both carding 217 totals.
Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe was third at 218, Mike Wesko of methodist finished fourth at 219 and Jantzen Latham of Transylvania was fifth at 220.
Scott Obenshain (77, 79, 74) was Ferrum's top finisher; he tied for 45th with five other golfers all with a 230 total.
Grayson Gibson (85, 80, 83) and Jacob Hardy (87, 83, 78) tied for 129th with a 248 total; Erick Cox (86, 79, 88) finished in a three-way deadlock for 137th; and Chandler Marshall (83, 87, 95) was 148th.
Ferrum returns to action this weekend at the Camp Lejeune Invitational, to be held Friday through Sunday, March 22-24, at Paradise Point Golf Club.
