FERRUM -- Nationally-ranked and multi-time reigniing USA South Athletic Conference champion Christopher Newport University (CNU) finished the match on a 6-2 run en route to a 13-8 victory over Ferrum College in a league women's lacrosse match Saturday at Penn-Roediger Field.
The Captains (2-0 in the USA South, 7-1 overall) led 7-6 with 21 minutes left before netting six of the match's final eight goals.
Ashton Marshall tallied four goals and Laura King scored three for CNU.
Also, Elena Obregon scored two goals and passed out two assists, while Jessica Singer netted a goal and distributed an assist.
Hannah Slough played all 60 minutes in net for CNU and registered four saves.
For Ferrum (2-1 in the USA South, 6-3 overall), which suffered its second straight loss, its first in conference play, Brooke Hewartson scored three goals and passed out an assist, while Sydney Hewartson netted two goals and distributed two assists.
Also, Lauren Blankenship scored two goals, while Angelyn Brown had one goal and Whitney Owensby distributed an assist.
Panthers goalkeeper Amanda Cheney went the distance in net and registered 12 saves.
Ferrum returns to action Tuesday at home against Randolph College.
Match time is 7 p.m. at Penn-Roediger Field.
