| Panthers split twin bill with Monarchs |

FERRUM -- Rachel Shumaker went 3 of 7 at the plate in two games with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run Saturday as Ferrum College split a USA South Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Methodist (N.C.) University at Franklin Community Bank Field.
The Panthers (3-1 in the USA South, 14-6 overall), the reigning USA South champions, dropped the opener 1-0, then earned the split with a 7-4 victory in the second game.
Methodist (1-1 in the USA South, 10-9 overall) opened league play with the twinbill.
In the first game, Methodist pitcher Jessica Farmer tossed a five-hit shutout. She allowed two walks and struck out two.
Ferrum starting pitcher Kaitlyn Culler gave up four hits and an earned run over five innings. She struck out two.
Freshman Emily Taylor pitched two frames of no-hit, shut-out relief.
In the second game, Shumaker tossed a complete-game nine-hitter.
Shumaker, a senior righthander, struck out three and allowed two walks and two earned runs.
At the plate, Shumaker collected two base hits.
Shelbie Hall paced the Panthers at the plate; she was 2 of 3 with a double, an RBI and scored twice.
A Sunday league doubleheader at home against Greensboro (N.C.) College was rained out. No make-up date has been set.
