Panthers take two of three from LaGrange

FERRUM -- Ferrum College's baseball team swept LaGrange (Ga.) College Saturday in a doubleheader at W.B. Adams Field to take a three-game USA South Athletic Conference series, 2-1.

The Panthers (5-13 in the USA South, 10-14 overall) dropped the first game of the set, 6-3, then swept the twinbill, 7-1 and 3-1.

In Saturday's first game, Wes Walker belted a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Second baseman Matt Reynolds was 4 of 4 with a double and an RBI. He scored four runs.

Justin Cox, Trey Laney, Brennan Iley and Eddie McGrath each recorded two base hits. Jake Perkins struck out eight in a complete-game effort.

A two-run double by Taryn Hayden keyed a four-run sixth frame by the Panthers, and Iley drove in two runs with a double in the seventh.?In the second game, Reynolds hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and Laney was 2 of 4 and scored once.

Reynolds' home run broke a 1-1 stalemate.

A sacrifice fly by Iley in the eighth produce an insurance run for the Panthers.

Tyler Easterly struck out five in a complete-game showing. He allowed three hits.

Brent Kinsey collected a pair of hits for LaGrange (9-9 in the USA South, 11-11 overall) in the first game and Josh Shiver totaled two hits in the second game.

In the first game of the series, Reynolds was 2 of 3 with a double. He scored once.

Righthander Chris Walker surrendered nine hits, three walks and two earned runs in eight innings. He struck out six.

Ferrum returns to action Wednesday against Southern Virginia University.

Game time at Adams Field is 7 p.m.

The contest is the last of a four-game Ferrum homestand.
