ROANOKE -- The local JAKES (Juniors Aquiring Knowlege, Ethics and Sportsmanship) Event, held annually in September and staged and sponsored by the Franklin County Longbeards has been cited by the Virginia chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) as the "Best JAKES Event in Virginia for 150-200 Attendance.'
The Franklin County Longbeards is the local chapter of NWTF.
The award was present to members of the Longbeards during the NWTF annual state banquet held in Roanoke in January.
The local JAKES Event has been honored on numerous occasions by both the national and state NWTF and the Longbeards have received the state award several years in a row according to a press release from the local chapter.
Chapter officials said they "appreciate the help of the sponsors and parents who help make the (JAKES Event) possible and such a success.'
The JAKES Event is a day-long outdoors program that gives local youth the opportunity to learn about and experience various activities such as archery, fishing, shot guns, rock wall climbing and turkey calling. Topics such as hunter safety, tree stand safety, hunting ethics, game regulations, driving safety and law enforcement are discussed and practiced.
The event returns for its 15th year in September at Waid Recreation Area and Sports Complex.
