A Rocky Mount man was indicted Monday by a Franklin County grand jury on six felony charges in connection with a raid on a suspected meth lab in January.

Robert Eli Bernard, 27, is charged with the manufacture of methamphetamine, possession of chemical ingredients with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, and two counts of distribution of methamphetamine.

Bernard is also charged with child neglect because a 9-month-old girl was inside the residence on Edgemont Street at the time of the raid, according to Lt. Todd Maxey with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

Bernard was also indicted on one count of distribution of imitation morphine, also a felony, which occurred on May 12, 2012.

On Jan. 6, investigators with the sheriff's office and Virginia State Police executed a search warrant at the residence about 5 a.m., based on reports of suspicious activity, Maxey said.

Investigators and special agents seized equipment and chemicals used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, as well as a white powdery substance believed to be methamphetamine in a newly-constructed outbuilding and the kitchen of the residence, Maxey said.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt but is a determination by jurors that enough evidence exists to warrant a trial.
