Passport Day USA event set in Rocky Mount

Monday, March 4, 2013

A special passport event at the Rocky Mount Municipal Building will be hosted by the town on Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide passport information and accept passport applications from U.S. citizens.

The event is in conjunction with celebrating Passport

Day in the USA 2013.

"This will be a good opportunity for those in need of a passport who are unable to come in during our normal business hours to take advantage of our service," said Stacey Sink, passport program manager for the town.

U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when entering or re-entering the United States by air. Additionally, U.S. citizens entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports-of-entry must present a passport book, passport card or other local travel documents approved by the U.S. government.

Information on the cost and how to apply for a U.S. passport is available from the Department of State at travel.state.gov or by phone by calling the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.

"The best way to make the application process go smoothly is for applicants to come prepared with the necessary materials," Sink said. "The Department of State website details all of the proper documentation that is required to make an application and provides site-specific information."

"Passport applicants will be accepted at the event on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis " Sink said. "We are unsure of the number of applicants we will have, and since the staff available to accept applications is limited to those who have been approved by the U.S. Department of State, we ask that applicants come prepared, come early and remain patient throughout the process."

Applicants can expect a festive application process, including decorations, music and light refreshments.

The town municipal building is at 345 Donald Avenue in Rocky Mount.
