|Clarke swishes game-winner for Panthers|

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Brian Clarke swished a jumper with one second left Thursday to lead No. 2 seed Ferrum College to a 73-71 quarterfinal-round victory over No. 7 seed Maryville (Tenn.) College in the USA South Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament at the Crown Center Arena.
Ferrum's victory is its third this season over Maryville and gives it a 10-23 record in the conference tournament since 1989, the year in which the Panthers made their debut in the postseason event.
Maryville (10-14), which was making its debut in the USA South tournament, finishes its season with the loss.
The Scots enjoyed their last lead, 71-69, with 1:03 left after Craig Raye made one of two tries from the free-throw line.
With 50 seconds showing, Jamal Pullen hit two free throws for Ferrum (14-10) to produce a 71-71 stalemate.
Pullen netted a game-best 25 points for the Panthers. He was 5 of 9 from the floor and 15 of 16 from the free-throw line.
The Scots had a chance to break the late deadlock, but Spencer Peake missed two attempts from the line. with 21 seconds left.
Clarke grabbed the rebound off of Peake's second miss. His rebound set up his game-winning shot.
Maryville got a time out after Clarke's make. When play resumed, Wes Lambert missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Maryville led 19-12 at the 10:21 mark of the first half, but Ferrum erased that deficit with a 23-11 run to move in front by four points, 35-31, at intermission. Reserve freshman Josh Bruce swished a 3-pointer during that run.
At 17:23 of the second half, the Scots recaptured the lead, 40-39, when Lambert drilled a 3-pointer.
The Panthers would square the count at 63 after J.D. Wallace hit a pair of free throws with 5:35 remaining.
There would be two more ties prior to Maryville attaining its last advantage.
Christian Ford led the Scots wih 16 points. Lambert finished with 11 and Joey Bodewig netted 10 and Oscar Butler added 10.
Ford, a sophomore and an all-conference performer, made 8 of 15 shots from the field.
Wallace, the USA South Rookie of the Year, scored 13 points. Marshall Hamilton scored nine and Clarke, a junior transfer from Patrick Henry Community College, finished with eight.
Ferrum converted 31 of 36 attempts (86 percent) from the free-throw line.
From the field, Ferrum was 19 of 49 (38.8 percent), while Maryville was 28 of 59 (47.5 percent).
The game featured nine ties and 12 lead changes.
