Third Guns and Hoses game is set for tonight

The third annual Guns and Hoses basketball game will be played tonight at Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

Tip off is 7 p.m.

The game matches local law enforcement officers against local firefighters with proceeds going to the Jason Maxey Scholarship Fund.

Admission is $5.

Tickets will only be sold at the door.


Ferrum makes changes to home baseball series

FERRUM -- With the National Weather Service predicting inclement weather in the Ferrum area over the next 48 hours, Ferrum College will move its three-game USA South Athletic Conference baseball series with Methodist (N.C.) University.

The games were scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, but have been rescheduled for Sunday and Monday, Feb. 24-25.

The two teams will will play a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon and a single game Monday at 1 p.m. at W.B. Adams Field.


Football club to meet March 4 at FCHS

Franklin County Eagles Football Booster Club will hold its monthly meeting Monday, March 4 at 6 p.m.

The meeting will be held in the lecture room of the Dorothy Phelps Student Center at Franklin County High School.

Club officials said more parent involvement with the club is needed and that the club welcomes the help of all FCHS football fans.

Boys' youth lacrosse registration is open

The Franklin County Lacrosse Club is taking registrations for boys' youth lacrosse for the upcoming spring season, which runs from March 10 to May 18.

Cost is $60.

Ages 7 to 14 (as of Aug. 31, 2012) are eligible to register.

The program is co-sponsored by the Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Franklin County will play its home matches at Waid Recreation Area and Sports Complex at Six-Mile Post.

Cost includes an FC Lacrosse t-shirt. Scholarships may be available for qualifying participants.

All players must be a member of US Lacrosse -- a youth membership cost $25.

All players must pay a $20 yearly fee to the recreation department if they did not play a fall or winter sport sponsored by the recreation department.

Equipment may be available for rental. Equipment check out date is March 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at Waid Recreation Area and Sports Complex.

Registration is open for spring sports

SONTAG -- The registration deadline for the following youth sports sponsored by the Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation is Friday, March 1.

There is a non-refundable $20 registration fee.

This fee is charged only once during the period from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

Registration is available for these sports online at t-ball (ages 4-5), baseball (ages 5-19), girls' fastpitch softball (ages 7-18), co-ed spring soccer (ages 4-18) and girls' lacrosse (ages 5-18).

Also, registration is available for the local Challenger Baseball League (ages 5-18), which gives boys and girls with mental and/or physical disabilities the opportunity to experience the fun of playing baseball.

Any registration received after Friday, March 1 will be charged an additional, non-refundable $15 late fee.

No registrations will be accepted after March 29.

Recreation department is sponsoring contests

SONTAG -- Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering two contests through Friday, March 29.

•Name The Franklin County Parks and Recreation Magazine Contest: Contestants will be asked to come up with a name for the department's tri-annual magazine.

Contestants should provide their suggested name for the magazine and contact in formation in case you are the winner.

The winner will be rewarded for his or her effort.

•Franklin County Parks and Recreation Magazine Photo Contest: Contestants will be asked to submit a photo for the cover of the 2013 May-August magazine.

NWTF Hunting Heritage banquet is scheduled

The Franklin County Longbeards chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will hold its annual Hunting Heritage Banquet, Saturday, March 2 at the Pigg River Community Center.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner begins at 7 p.m.

The Pigg River Community Center is on 2410 South Main Street in Rocky Mount.

The national organization is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The Longbeards will offer a Remington Versa Max, valued at $1,200, on a live auction. It will be exempt from the Pick of the Flock.

Gun of the Year is a $20 Browning Silver Semi-Automatic 12 gage.

Ticket prices are $60 for a single, $75 for a couple, $255 for a sponsor, $25 for Jakes (youth), $280 for sponsor couple, $495 for a table of eight (a sponsor couple ticket and three couples tickets) and $35 for membership only.

In the $495 ticket, the sponsor receives an NWTF hat, pin, bag, 10 raffle tickets and a chance on the sponsor gun (a Remington 770 270 with a scope).

In the $280 ticket, the sponsor receives an NWTF hat, pin, bag and a chance on the sponsor gun.

In the $255 ticket, the sponsor receives an NWTF hat, pin, bag and a chance on the sponsor gun.
