|Second-quarter blitz yields first win for Panthers, 12-8|

FERRUM -- Ferrum College's men's lacrosse team trailed 2-0 six minutes into the match, but rallied, courtesy of a nine-goal blitz, and held on for a 12-8 non-conference win over Randolph College Wednesday in its 2013 home opener at W.B. Adams Stadium.
With the victory, its first of the season, Ferrum (1-2), now in its third intercollegiate lacrosse campaign, ends a five-match losing streak dating to last year.
After Colton Wood and Devin Sigmon put Randolph on top 2-0 at the 9:00 mark of the first period, Tyler Poage scored the first of his three goals for Ferrum at 7:53, followed by Will Walters' goal at 6:56 to knot the score at 2-2.
Poage put the Panthers out in front with another goal to open the second period at 14:43.
Nick Smith scored at the 12:30 mark, then Ethan Wakefield placed a pair of shots past Randolph goalkeeper Cam Davis to make it 6-2 Ferrum.
Walter, Dylan Burdick and Marcus Boyer netted goals before the second period was complete to end the blitz which produced a 9-2 Panthers' advantage at intermission.
Poage finished with three goals and a pair of assists for Ferrum, while Walter tallied two goals and distributed two assists.
Wood scored four goals for Randolph (1-1), while Steven Allman scored a goal and passed out an assist.
Josh Liptak played all 60 minutes in goal for Ferrum and registered four saves.
Davis went the distance in net for Randolph and stopped 15 shots.
Ferrum returns to action Saturday with the start of a Spring Break road trip.
The Panthers take on Huntingdon (Ala.) College that afternoon, then they play Birmingham Southern College Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Both matches will be played in Birmingham, Ala.
Ferrum's next home match is Sunday, March 3 against Wesley (Del.) College. Faceoff is 1 p.m. at Adams Stadium.
