Sophea Carr, a fifth-grade student at Snow Creek Elementary, is the winner of Franklin County's school division spelling bee, which was held Tuesday night at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.
There were 13 contestants, one representing each elementary school in the county and one from BFMS.
"It was a very exciting bee," said Jodie Robinson, gifted coordinator for Franklin County Public Schools. "The words the students were asked to spell were quite challenging."
After 17 rounds, Carr's winning word was "protuberant."
The runner-up is Rowan Abshire-Sims, a seventh-grader at BFMS.
"Both ladies were extremely calm and poised while spelling some difficult words," said Robinson.
Carr will represent Franklin County public schools at the regional spelling bee Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn in Roanoke. |
