A Penhook man was arrested Saturday night after leading deputies on a high-speed chase on Sontag Road and a short foot pursuit through a field.
Jacob Daniel Wermann, 27, is charged with a felony count of eluding police, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving after his license had been revoked and possession of marijuana, according to Lt. Justin Sigmon with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Wermann is also charged with grand larceny and receiving stolen goods in connection with a theft earlier in the day Saturday, Sigmon added.
After responding to a report of stolen property in the Snow Creek area, Cpl. T.S. Dameron identified Wermann as a suspect in the theft, Sigmon said.
Just after 11 p.m. Saturday, the suspect was seen turning off U.S. 220 onto Sontag Road in a Mercury Mountaineer sport utility vehicle, Sigmon said.
Two patrol units pursued the SUV east on Sontag Road until the suspect turned around suddenly near Mt. Carmel Road and began heading west, Sigmon said. Shortly afterward, the driver lost control and the SUV ran off the right side of the roadway into a field.
The suspect fled on foot but was apprehended by Dameron after a short pursuit through the field, Sigmon said.
Wermann is being held in the Western Virginia Regional Jail without bond.
Other deputies involved in the chase were Sgt. C.O. Johnson and Deputy D.K. King. |
