SATURDAY, FEB. 9

Booker T. Washington National Monument will hold "Story Time Saturdays for Children" from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Park rangers will read a book focusing on stories related to Washington's lifetime from the Civil War through the Civil Rights period in America.

An introduction to pistol shooting for women class will be offered at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $100 and includes all instruction, practice firing and lunch. Call Peter Fisette at 540-400-1070 for more information.

A talk on Dr. Washington's connections to Richmond's Maggie L. Walker will be held at the Booker T. Washington National Monument's visitor center auditorium at 2 p.m.

The Friends of Booker T. Washington National Monument will celebrate Dr. Washington's 157th birthday with the second annual Legacy Birthday Dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. at Trinity Ecumenical Church. Guest speaker will be Dr. James A. Holmes, the only principal of Booker T. Washington Elementary School and the first African American national park ranger.
