Lake Christian Ministries (LCM) has received a $4,500 grant from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation to help local residents in need this year.
Lake Christian Ministries will use the grant to help purchase food supplies for about 1,135 members of the Smith Mountain Lake community that are assisted each month.
"Our clients are provided with food for two healthy meals a day, for five days, for each member of their household," said LCM Executive Director Mike Bond. "This allows them to use some of their money for other expenses, such as heating their homes."
"We are very grateful to have Food Lion as a strong community partner," Bond added. " We work closely with them to provide items, such as fresh milk and other perishable items, to our clients."
Over 50 percent of LCM clients are under age 18 or age 60 and over.
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves.
Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants.
