The 11th annual breakfast celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was held Jan. 21 at The Pigg River Community Center.
Guest speaker, Dr. Wornie Reed, director of Race and Policy Research Center and also professor of sociology and Africana studies at Virginia Tech, did an excellent job relating his experiences as a college student, witnessing the life of Dr. King during the civil rights struggle of the 60s.
The MLK Breakfast Club would like to thank local government officials, political leaders, town and county officials, school and college officials, educators, clergymen, leaders of various organizations, Cable 12, The Franklin News-Post, and the local community for attending this event. Our thanks also to the participants in the program, caterers, ushers, parking attendants and all who participated to make this celebration a success.
Rev. John Heck and Mr. Andre Peery were given Community Service awards at this year's event. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to Helping Hands and The Free Clinic of Franklin County.
The MLK Breakfast Club members are Mary Helm, Florella Johnson, Glenna Moore, Bettye Buckingham, Josephine Edwards, William Helm and Larry Moore.
