‘I own guns because I acknowledge mankind's shortcomings instead of pretending like they don't exist’

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Concerning all the talk about guns, shootings and the meaning of the Second Amendment. Strictly speaking, none of the Amendments give any rights. They list rights that the people already have. They were viewed by our forefathers as being natural rights that come from the Creator God.

A number of years ago, a Senate Judiciary Committee did what was probably the most extensive legal research yet on the Second Amendment and their conclusion was inescapable....."that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner." It's not hard to find out the meaning of the Second Amendment, you don't even need a Senate Committee to tell you. You just look at the original intent. Samuel Adams said, "The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own guns." Patrick Henry asked, "Who are the militia?" He then answered, "They consist of the whole people."

Now lets look at some facts. From 1977 to 1992, concealed carry laws reduced the rate of murder by 8.5 percent and rape by 5 percent. The United Kingdom (a gun free country) has a violent crime rate of 2,034 per 100,000 residents; however, the United States has a rate of 466 per 100,000 residents. The United States is number one in the world in gun ownership, and yet it is only 28th in the world in gun murders. Estimates are that guns are used from 1.5 million to 3 million times a year in self defense.

I will close with these profound words by Marine veteran Cpl. Joshua Boston: "I own guns because I acknowledge mankind's shortcomings instead of pretending like they don't exist. There are evil men in this world, and there may be a time when I need to do the unthinkable to protect me or my family."
