Baseball coaches are needed for spring season

Franklin County Little League Baseball is looking for head and assistant coaches for the 2013 spring season.

The only experience necessary is the enjoyment of working with youth

Youth wrestlers medal at Smith Mountain Lake Open

MONETA -- Franklin County's youth wrestling team competed in the Smith Mountain Lake Open at Staunton River High School on Saturday, Jan. 12 and several of its wrestlers were awarded medals for their showings.

Capturing first-place laurels and winning gold medals in their weight classes were Chase Daniel, Drew Fisher, Luke Grimes, Ethan Mullins and Dyson Spence.

Placing second and receiving silver medals in their weight classes were Jonathan Correa, Devin Dillon, Will English, Drew Fisher and Clayton Hodges.

Finishing third and earning bronze medals in their weight classes were Devin Edwards, Dylan England, Will English, Issiah Herycyk, Jacob Poland, Trent Shelton, Aiden Wampler and Harmon English in two weight classes.


Ferrum to host girls' lacrosse clinic Saturday

FERRUM -- Ferrum College will host a girls' lacrosse clinic Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The clinic will be held on the college's practice field.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation.

There will be instruction in the basic fundamentals of the game such as passing, catching, cradling, taking possession of ground balls, shooting and defense.

7 on 7 and 12 on 12 games will be played.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring their stick, goggles and a mouth guard. Sticks and goggles will be available for use for those who do not have them.

Registration fee is $20.

On-site registration will be taken the day of the clinic.

Those planning to attend should bring a completed liability waiver with them or fill one out the day of the event.

The waiver can be obtained by visiting the Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation's website.

Softball team schedules 'Parents' Night Out'

Franklin County's softball program will host its fourth annual "Parents' Night Out' softball clinic, Friday, Feb. 18.

The clinic, sponsored by the Lady Eagles Softball Booster Club, is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School's West Gymnasium and the Eagles indoor hitting facility, which is adjacent to W.W. Naff Jr. Field.

Cost is $20.
