My mother, Shirley Hodges, was the lady who was murdered and dumped in Alabama. My mother and I had gotten to know Victor Conner through the years because he was our funeral director through the loss of my sister, my dad and my niece. We loved Victor for being such a kind man that grew to be our friend, not just our funeral director.
As soon as Victor found out mom was missing, he called me, and from day one, he was a constant support to me. He personally went to Alabama and brought my mother home to me. He called and texted me throughout the two-day trip to update me and knowing that he brought mom home was so comforting.
What I didn't know was that Victor was really sick and the morning he was to head back to Virginia from Alabama, he was so sick he couldn't drive. His assistant drove the trip back.
Victor is such a wonderful Christian man, dad, husband, son and brother, and he has always given back to the community. Once I was aware of Victor's illness, I felt I must do something more than praying daily. So I spoke with his brother, Vance, and got permission to organize a fundraising breakfast.
I would gladly given an organ to Victor if I had a spare! Victor is experiencing heart failure and spent a lot of 2012 hospitalized at UVA away from him business (Conner Bowman Funeral Home), his home and his family. He is on the list for a heart transplant. This serious health issue came after he battled and beat cancer.
The fundraiser will be held at the Applebee's in Rocky Mount on Saturday, Jan. 19th from 8 to 10 a.m. for $5 per person. This includes pancakes, sausage and beverage.
