The Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA) Board of Directors had agreed to oppose lifting the current ban on uranium mining in Virginia after a review and discussion at its December meeting.
SMLA said it is aware of the concerns of the lake and surrounding communities regarding the proposed Coles Hill uranium mine.
SMLA said it does not find compelling evidence for lifting the ban in order to initiate uranium mining at the Coles Hill site.
SMLA did not to take a position on the Coles Hill mine until after the report of the governor's working group of subject matter experts was released.
A team of SMLA board members has now reviewed the report and prior information as it became available.
The SMLA Board is recommending that there needs to be more comprehensive regulations and resources to insure minimized risk to public health and safety regarding the proposed Coles Hill project. |
