Wednesday, December 12, 2012

By K.A. WAGONER - Staff Writer

A Hardy man died Sunday evening after his pickup truck struck an embankment and overturned on Route 122.

James Alton Blankenship, 66, was traveling north on Booker T. Washington Highway in a 1991 Ford Ranger when the truck ran off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned, according to Sgt. Rob Carpentieri with the Virginia State Police.

Blankenship was transported to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later, Carpentieri said.

Blankenship was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The crash occurred about 8:15 p.m. on Route 122, one-tenth of a mile south of Route 699.
