FERRUM -- Ferrum College has announced that men's swimming has been added as an intercollegiate sport beginning in the fall of 2013.
The move follows the creation of a women's swimming program in 2011.
Current women's swimming coach Tom Calomeris will coach both teams.
"We have a proud athletic tradition and this will allow us to offer another option to our student-athletes," said Ferrum Director of Athletics Abe Naff.
Men's swimming is being offered as a club sport for the duration of the 2012-2013 academic year.
The team will commence intercollegiate competition with the fall 2013 term.
"There are a number of strong high school and club swim programs in the region," said Calomeris. This is an opportunity for young men who enjoy the sport to continue to compete while getting a first class education at Ferrum College."
Ferrum's pool underwent a significant renovation in 2011 with new lighting, electronic timing and new starting blocks.
Men's and women's swimming join recently added sports wrestling and men's lacrosse, bringing Ferrum's number of athletic programs to 19.
Ferrum Dean of Admissions Gilda Woods said admissions counselors recently began advising potential incoming students of the opportunity.
"We think swimming, a lifetime activity, is a perfect fit for our students," Woods said.
