Give locally this year

Friday, November 16, 2012

What We Care of Franklin County does is truly wonderful. When We Care started in 1990, our goal was to provide Christmas to a few underprivileged children in Franklin County. Several businesses and individuals came together, raised money and provided for several children that year. It was so gratifying to see this happen. From that point, it has grown into We Care helping over 1,000 underprivileged children at Christmas alone.

Our Christmas event involves about 100 volunteers over a period of a week. During the week, we have the parents of our children come and shop at our Christmas "store." At the end of the week, we have a party for the children. The party involves refreshments, games and, of course, Santa Claus. Just to see the look on a child's face when they see Santa and know they will have something to open on Christmas morning makes our Christmas more meaningful.

One of the amazing qualities that sets us apart from other non-profit organizations is that we are solely made up of volunteers. There are NO paid salaries and NO benefits other than the pure gratification that comes with being a part of such a great organization. Another tremendous quality of our organization is that every dollar that is donated stays right here in Franklin County.

We rely solely on donations that we receive from the community to allow us to continue having such a wonderful event. Each year, our costs steadily increase. Most of us have, in some way, been touched by the economic situation that is happening right now. It may not have affected you directly, but we are sure that you know a family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor who has fallen on tough times.

This year, when you are considering giving to a charity, we urge you to give locally. Help us to help the children in our own community to have a great Christmas.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please call me at 483-7900. If you would like to send a donation, mail it to We Care of Franklin County, Inc., P.O. Box 396, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
