The Franklin County public school system is ranked fourth of 117 Virginia school divisions by SchoolDigger.com, a K-12 search and comparison tool for parents.
Using data from the National Center of Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education and Virginia Department of Education, the website averages math and English test scores across all grade levels to determine the ranking of school divisions.
In the area, only Roanoke County public schools scored higher than Franklin County with a second-place ranking. Salem City public schools ranked 10th.
In the elementary school rankings, Snow Creek and Burnt Chimney tied for a 26th ranking out of 1060 Virginia elementary schools.
SchoolDigger.com only ranks schools that are designated as "regular" elementary, middle or high schools by the U.S. Department of Education. Schools labeled as "other" or "alternative" are not included.
The website only ranks schools that have current published test scores from that state's department of education. Private schools are not listed since they are usually not required to administer state tests.
