The Town of Rocky Mount has been notified by a local business that a scammer is calling, claiming to represent the Town of Rocky Mount to raise money for the Community and Hospitality Center.
This is a scam, according to Assistant Town Manager Matt Hankins. The town has not engaged solicitors to collect money to support this community center.
"This sort of predator is trying to fool our businesses and residents into supporting a good community activity, but they are really out for your credit card numbers and banking information," Hankins said.
"Don't let your good nature override good sense when it comes to protecting your assets from criminals," he added.
Never give banking information, Social Security numbers, credit card or debit card numbers to solicitors.
Thus far, the solicitors' calls have shown as "blocked" or "restricted" on caller ID, Hankins said. However, anyone who receives a call from these scammers should write down any number that may show up and contact the Rocky Mount Police Department at 540-483-9275 or the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 540-483-3000. |
