A Rocky Mount man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday in Franklin County Circuit Court for taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14.
Curtis Lee McGhee, 64, pleaded guilty to the charge through an agreement with the commonwealth's attorney's office, which called for eight years and two months of the prison time to be suspended, leaving him one year and 10 months to serve.
The prosecution offered the plea so the child would not have to testify, according to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Patrick Nix.
The incident involved a 5-year-old child and occurred on May 2 at McGhee's residence, according to court records.
In addition to the prison sentence, McGhee will be placed on probation for three years when released.
McGhee was also ordered by the court to be of good behavior for 15 years and have no contact with the victim or the victim's family or any other child under the age of 18 or any YMCA or school.
McGhee will also be classified as a sex offender and must stay registered with the Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry and abstain from using any illegal drugs or alcohol.
