The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the CHILL (Communities Helping Improve Local Lives) Youth Task Force will host a bass fishing tournament and a Zumba class on Saturday, Oct. 6 to benefit the Giving Soles 2 Souls program.
The fishing tournament will be held at Smith Mountain Lake, according to Lt. Todd Maxey. Boats will launch from Penhook Boat Dock. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m.
The second event on Saturday is a 90-minute Zumba class at Benjamin Franklin Middle School at 10 a.m.
Admission to the class is $5 or a new pair of children's shoes.
Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness program that features high energy Latin and international beats. Zumba choreography incorporates merengue, salsa, samba, and hip-hop dance moves.
The Pumpkin Ball Tournament scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6 has been canceled due to low team registration.
The Soles 2 Souls program will provide shoes to local children who do not have adequate footwear for winter.
Monetary donations, as well as new footwear, will be accepted until the week of Thanksgiving when the shoes will be distributed to children who have been identified as having a need for the shoes, Maxey said.
Donation boxes are located at several local retail businesses, as well as the sheriff's office, for citizens to conveniently make donations. In addition to these collection sites, several more events are planned to raise money for the program.
