Celtics' AAU tryouts to start Sunday
The Franklin County Celtics Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball Organization will be holding tryouts for boys in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8, and will fill teams for 10th and 11th grade boys after Franklin County's 2012-13 boys' varsity basketball season is complete.
The fifth and sixth grade tryout schedule begins Sunday, Oct. 7 atBenjamin Franklin Middle in the West Gymnasium from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Also, tryouts in this group are set for Oct. 11, Oct. 17, Oct. 23, Oct. 29 and Oct. 30 at Lee M.Waid Elementary School from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and at BFMS on Oct. 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Seventh and eighth grade tryouts are slated for Oct. 25, Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 at Christian Heritage Academy (CHA) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Celtics organization was established in 2010.

Ferrum men fall 3-2 in OT to St. Mary's
FERRUM -- Matthew Braun netted the last of his two goals eight seconds into overtime Monday to lead St. Mary's (Md.) College to a 3-2 non-conference men's soccer victory over Ferrum College at Penn-Roediger Field.
Ferrum, which suffered its second straight loss, cashed in a 2-0 halftime advantage.
The Seahawks (4-6) tallied two goals in the opening five minutes of the second stanza to force overtime.
Eddy Funes and Aaron Gustine tallied goals for the Panthers (0-2-1 in the USA South Athletic Conference, 4-6-1 overall).
Goalkeeper Justin Robinson played the entire match for the Panthers and registered four saves.
Nate Ramsland recorded seven saves for St. Mary's.
Ferrum plays back-to-back road matches this weekend.
Saturday, the Panthers visit first-year conference foe LaGrange (Ga.) College. Match time is 11 a.m.
Sunday, Ferrum travels to Huntingdon (Ala.) College for a noon non-league encounter.
Huntingdon becomes a USA South rival of Ferrum's next year.

William Byrd tops BFMS in volleyball
VINTON -- William Byrd Middle School swept Benjamin Franklin Middle School, 2-0, in Roanoke Valley Middle School District volleyball match Monday.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-16.
Byrd's victory is its second this season over BFMS (2-8 in the district, 2-10 overall), which suffered its eighth straight loss.
BFMS plays Hidden Valley today. |
