The Gereau Center for Applied Technology is one of 51 schools being recognized by the Virginia Naturally Program and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF).
"This school year will be the second year that the U.S. Education Department will recognize the environmental efforts of schools across the country," said Suzie Gilley with the DGIF.
Along with being recognized as a USED (U.S. Education Department) Green Ribbon School by supporting environmental conservation, The Gereau Center will receive a plaque honoring them for becoming a first year VAN (Virginia Naturally) school.
Virginia Naturally provides citizens and educators with statewide environmental resources, including information about volunteer opportunities, educational classes, places to visit, community events, watershed maps, lesson plans and recreational activities, according to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) website.
Virginia Naturally is supported by public and private organizations and agencies dedicated to linking people to Virginia's natural and historic resources.
Virginia Naturally Schools, PLT Green Schools, Green Flag Schools and other programs are stepping stones to the USED Green Ribbon Schools.
More information about the Virginia Naturally Program can be found at www.deq.virginia.gov. |
