Starting this week, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office will accept donations to provide shoes to local children who do not have adequate footwear for winter.

The Giving Soles 2 Souls program is also sponsored by Franklin County High School students in the CHILL (Communities Helping Improve Local Lives) Youth Task Force, according to Lt. Todd Maxey.

Monetary donations, as well as new footwear, will be accepted until the week of Thanksgiving when the shoes will be distributed to children who have been identified as having a need for the shoes, Maxey said.

Donation boxes will be located at several local retail businesses, as well as the sheriff's office, for citizens to conveniently make donations. In addition to these collection sites, several events have been organized in an effort to raise money for the program.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the National Take Back Initiative will collect unused and unwanted medications for safe disposal at locations throughout Franklin County. Drop boxes for new shoes will be provided at these locations.

On Oct. 6, a bass fishing tournament will be held at Smith Mountain Lake. Boats will launch from Penhook Boat Dock. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m.

Also on Oct. 6, a pumpkin ball tournament will be held at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School on the softball field. The tournament will start at 10 a.m.

And a 90-minute Zumba Class will also be held on Oct. 6 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The class will begin at 10 a.m.

Other events will continue to be planned up until Thanksgiving.
