The 13th annual "Pack the Bus" tour collected $5,248.38 in school supplies last week for area students in need.
All supplies that were collected at Walmart in Rocky Mount will remain in Franklin County to provide underprivileged children with the needed supplies to start school.
County children received $184 from Pepsi and a grant for $3,000 from Walmart. Jar donations, including a $50 donation from the Franklin County Education Association and a $90 donation from the Franklin County School Board, totaled $2064.38.
The following businesses and organizations donated additional school supplies: United Way of Franklin County, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Member One, Dollar General, Walgreens and Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, which collected 55 book bags.
Miss Greater Franklin County, Miss Greater Franklin County Outstanding Teen and Pre-Teen, Tiny Miss Greater Franklin County and Mini Miss Greater Franklin County all helped in collecting donations during the event.
Franklin County schools' PTO representatives purchased school supplies for their schools using the grant money.
"A lot of them have been helping with Pack the Bus for several years now and really have their act together, showing up with lists and calculators," said Keith Pennington, director of curriculum and instruction for Franklin County schools.
"They're (PTO reps) the ones who are familiar with the needs at their buildings and see that all students have everything they need for school," said Leslie Hall, central office administrative assistant. "It is because of them, grant money, donations and Q-99 that this event happens each year."
The Pack the Bus tour was sponsored by Pepsi, Walmart, Valleydale, Heiner's Bakery and Q-99.
