An asphalt milling machine from Patterson Brothers Paving waits on Warren Street Wednesday morning after making its first pass on Franklin Street. The machine removes older layers of asphalt before new layers are applied, keeping asphalt from getting too high around gutter pans and allowing a new, stronger base to be put in its place. Patterson Brothers Paving was the low bidder for Rocky Mount's paving work this summer, and intends to complete its work in town by Friday, Aug. 17.
