Connecticut man killed in single vehicle crash

Monday, August 13, 2012

By K.A. WAGONER - Staff Writer

A Connecticut man was killed Friday morning on U.S. 220 when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and ran off the highway just south of Boones Mill.

George Buster Mack, 71, of Hartford, Conn., was traveling south on 220 in a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe when he ran off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected and ran off the right side of the road, according to Trooper A.J. Berry with the Virginia State Police.

The sport utility vehicle then struck a guardrail and went over an embankment, striking several trees and another embankment at the bottom of a ravine, Berry said.

Three passengers in the SUV, Mack's wife, daughter and son-in-law, were transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, Berry said.

The family had been driving from Connecticut to Greensboro, N.C., Berry added.

Mack was wearing a seat belt, and speed was not a factor in the crash, Berry said.

The crash occurred about 8:10 a.m. on Virgil Goode Highway, about one-half mile south of Taylor's Road.

One southbound lane of traffic was blocked for about four hours while crews cleared the roadway.
