Incoming freshmen at Ferrum College will have a busy first weekend on campus as they work to package 100,000 meals for the hungry on Sunday, Sept. 2 to kick off the Ferrum College Centennial Celebration.

The event is a part of the Stop Hunger Now program.

"In keeping with the college's motto 'Not self, but others,' we would like our 600 new freshmen to pack the meals, working side by side with 250 community members who know the importance of providing for those in need," said Ferrum College President Jennifer L. Braaten. "I can't think of a better way to kick off our centennial celebration."

To meet this goal, organizers must raise $25,000 from college, community and corporate sources. The Rocky Mount Rotary Club has agreed to work with Ferrum College to coordinate fundraising with community members and organizations that would like to participate with the students. Local churches will also assist with fundraising and recruitment of volunteers.

The Stop Hunger Now event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Fitness Center on the Ferrum College campus. The students and volunteers will package the meals using several large assembly lines. Two volunteer shifts will be available to those interested in helping with the event, one from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and the other from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.

"We want the community to be aware of this effort and we hope area businesses and residents will help by contributing to the meal fund and join us to participate in the packing event," said Career Services Director Rol Walters, an on-campus organizer for the event.

Those interested in donating or participating should contact Walters at 540-365-4267. Checks may be written to Stop Hunger Now and mailed to Rol Walters at Ferrum College, 445 Ferrum Mountain Road, Ferrum, VA 24088.
