A Doe Run man was fatally injured in Burnt Chimney Monday morning when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a row of mailboxes.
Robert Leon Hodges, 20, was traveling south on Burnt Chimney Road in a 2002 Ford Focus when he ran off the left side of the roadway, according to Trooper D.H. Cepelnik with the Virginia State Police.
The car struck a row of about 15 mailboxes, Cepelnik said. A couple of the posts from the mailboxes crashed through the windshield and struck Hodges, critically injuring him.
Hodges was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he later died, according to Carilion spokesman Eric Earnhart.
Speed was not a factor in the crash, Cepelnik said.
The crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. Monday on Route 670 (Burnt Chimney Road), about 300 yards north of Lovely Valley Road. |
