The driver of an Isuzu Rodeo involved in a fatal crash on Route 116 on July 7 has been charged with failure to yield the right of way.
Charles Spears, 46, of Rocky Mount was traveling east on Sontag Road when he attempted to make a left turn and pulled into the path of a westbound motorcycle, driven by Dennis Keith Eggleston of Martinsville, according to Trooper D.H. Cepelnik with the Virginia State Police. The motorcycle collided with the Rodeo.
The speed of the motorcycle was a factor in the crash, Cepelnik said.
Eggleston, 56, was transported to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The incident is still under investigation, Cepelnik said.
The crash occurred on Saturday, July 7 about 9 a.m. on Route 619, just east of Route 707 (Ashpone Tavern Road). |
