A Glade Hill man was indicted Monday by a Franklin County grand jury on charges of throwing a missile at an occupied vehicle and assaulting a police officer.

James William Gillespie Sr., 48, is charged with throwing an object at a vehicle on Old Colonial Turnpike on Feb. 16.

Gillespie is also charged with assaulting a deputy when he was arrested. According the arrest warrant, Gillespie allegedly kicked the deputy in the groin area and the inner thigh.

In another incident involving a confrontation with law enforcement officers, Mark Anthony Adkins, 38, of Wirtz was indicted on counts of injuring and destroying property and public drunkenness on March 26.

The arrest of Adkins occurred when Sgt. Craig Sloan with the Rocky Mount Police Department responded to a disturbance at Candlewood Apartments, where Adkins was allegedly intoxicated.

Adkins was taken to the Franklin County Jail, where he allegedly took a telephone and busted out three window panes in the cell, according to the warrant.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but it is a determination by jurors that enough evidence exists to warrant a trial.
