|Dalton finds the outside to his liking at FCS|
Monday, July 9, 2012
CALLAWAY -- Veteran Steve Dalton maneuvered his racer to the outside and drove past Bobby Gillespie to take the checkered flag in a 35-lap Late Model Stock Car race Wednesday night at Franklin County Speedway (FCS).
The race was the main event of the speedway's annual Fourth of July racing card.
Gillespie took the lead on the race's final double-file restart, but his car got loose as it exited turn four.
And when Gillespie's mount lost the main groove on the 3/8-mile paved bullring, it gave Dalton just enough room to make the winning pass.
"That was fun -- winning on the outside,' Dalton said.
Gillespie, a veteran campaigner from Floyd, settled for second.
"Steve was just a little faster than we were,' Gillespie said.
In other races:
•Ronnie Covey won the 25-lap Mini Stock race after the car driven by Rocky Mount's David Duncan broke its front spindle with five laps to go.
Collinsville's Steve Cannaday rallied to finish second and series points leader Cody Underwood, a 15-year-old leadfoot, was third.
•Chris Amos swept twin Super U-Car races.
Todd Williams of Rocky Mount came in second in event event.
•Joey Phillips of Floyd was the victor in both U-Car races.
Eddie Bassinger of Rocky Mount took the runner-up spot in both races.
•Larry Bowman was triumphant in the Street Stock feature.
•Jennifer Chitwood won the Mini Cup race.
•Michael Bennett won the Kids U-Car race.
Racing returns to FCS Saturday, July 21, when the Open Wheel Modifieds are scheduled to compete.
Because of the expected heat, the race's first green flag will fall at 8 p.m.
