Chris Cameron presents a check on behalf of the Smith Mountain Lake Rotary Club to Bart Matthies of Lake Christian Ministries and chairman of the Jim Cameron Memorial Walk. The event will be held Sept. 22 at Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
Lake Christian Ministries (LCM), which holds the Jim Cameron Memorial Walk as a fundraiser, recently got a boost when Chris Cameron, widow of the late Jim Cameron, presented LCM with a donation on behalf of the Smith Mountain Lake Rotary Club.
The 5K walk and 10K non-timed run will be held at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration at 8:30 a.m.
The walk is a major fundraiser for LCM, which is provides food and other assistance to needy families and operates mobile food pantries.
Organizers of the event hope that each participate in the walk/run can generate sponsorships of $250 or more.
In addition to the walk/run, food and festivities will be provided to participants.
Jim Cameron, who died last year, was the executive director of LCM for nine years. During his tenure, he acted as LCM's spokesperson, ran day to day operations of the organization and assisted with the mobile food pantries.
Cameron also oversaw the implementation of new LCM programs, including three mobile food pantries and dental clinics. He was also instrumental in developing a partnership with area gardeners to grow fruits and vegetables for LCM clients.
