A Boones Mill woman was killed Sunday afternoon when she was struck by a dump truck at her residence on Primrose Circle.
Charlotte Clemons Pate, 74, was standing behind a 1970 GMC dump truck, along with several others, when it started to roll backward, according to Master Trooper Tim Harris with the Virginia State Police.
The dump truck was on a slight incline in the front yard of her residence when it either popped out of gear or was never placed in gear, Harris said. The emergency brake was not engaged.
Pate's son and grandson had been working on the private road (Primrose Circle), using a tractor with a front-end loader to dig out the ditch beside the road, Harris said. They were loading the dirt into the dump truck, which was facing the house.
When the dump truck began to roll, it struck Pate and then struck the tractor, Harris said.
Pate was pronounced dead at the scene, Harris said. No one else was injured.
No charges have been filed, Harris added.
Trooper S.A. Richardson is in charge of the investigation.
