Three Franklin County schools won first-place awards at the Piedmont Regional Odyssey of the Mind (OM) Tournament Saturday.

These included Franklin County High School, which won two first-place awards in separate OM problems.

Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Callaway Elementary School also won first-place awards.

FCHS's team won a first-place award in the high school division for the "You Make the Call" problem. FCHS also won first place in the high school division for the "To Be or Not To Be" problem.

BFMS won the first-place award in the middle school division for the "Odyssey Angels" problem.

Callaway Elementary won the first-place award in the elementary school division for the "Ooh-Motional Vehicle" problem.

By winning first-place awards, the FCHS, BFMS and Callaway teams will advance to the Virginia OM Finals on April 14 at Menchville High School in Newport News.

The regional tournament was the first in a series of competitions that will determine which teams will represent Virginia at the Odyssey of the Mind 2012 World Finals at Iowa State University in May.

Several other Franklin County schools also won second-place and third-place awards.

BFMS won a second-place award in the middle school division for "To Be or Not To Be" problem.

Snow Creek Elementary won a second-place award in the elementary division for the "You Make The Call" problem.

Lee M. Waid Elementary and Rocky Mount Elementary each won a third-place award in the elementary division. Lee M. Waid placed third in the "To Be or Not To Be" problem, and Rocky Mount Elementary placed third in the "Odyssey Angels" problem.

Callaway Elementary also won a third-place award in the elementary school division for the "Weird Science" problem.

The day-long OM tournament at FCHS attracted nearly 60 OM teams from 26 schools in Franklin County, Bedford County, Montgomery County, Roanoke City and Martinsville.

Brenda Hopkins, principal of Windy Gap Elementary School, and Jacquie Locklear are directors of the Piedmont Regional Odyssey of the Mind tournament.

The teams were judged on creativity, risk-taking, and how they solved their problem.

OM is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students. The students apply their creativity to solve problems, ranging from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

The competition involves teams of seven members, who choose from the selection of problems and prepare their solutions.
