A Franklin County corrections officer has been charged with indecent exposure and misdemeanor sexual battery.
Dustin Harley Patterson, 26, of Ferrum was issued a summons by state police officers on Tuesday to appear in Roanoke County General District Court on Jan. 11, 2012.
A female inmate has accused Patterson of improper conduct while driving her to the Western Virginia Regional Jail on Oct. 22, according to Sheriff Ewell Hunt.
The woman filed a complaint several days after the incident, and the sheriff's office requested the Virginia State Police to conduct an investigation, Hunt said.
As a result of the investigation, Patterson was suspended without pay, Hunt added.
Patterson was a corrections officer with the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office from May 2008 until he was hired by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office on Nov. 1, 2010.
Sexual battery and indecent exposure are Class 1 misdemeanors, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
